Illustration 30: Proposal for a Post-War Fire Department
Illustration 30 is a facsimile of the letter sent by the four Loyalist engineers to Governor George Clinton proposing that they organize and continue to manage the New York Fire Department after the war. The letter is dated November 27th 1783 shortly after the British had evacuated the city but before the city government was fully functional. The engineers give an account of their stewardship of the department during the war, endorse themselves to continue its management, and outline the engine and hook and ladder companies with their recommendations for foremen of each company.
