Appendix #16: Night Watch/Lighting Expenditures

Illustration 16: Night Watch/Lighting Expenditures

Isaac Stoutenburgh managed the Watch for almost 30 years. New York's dramatic increase in wealth during the Seven Years War (1756 - 1763) provided both the incentive and the funds for an improved Watch and City Lighting. Beginning in 1762 the funds for the expanded Watch and Lighting flowed through Isaac as they had for the previous two decades. The payments to Isaac earmarked for the Watch and Lighting are shown here. The increases resulted from Watch/Lighting legislation initiated in 1761.
